How many types of labels are in food Packaging?
Labels contain printed, detailed
information about the product and are custom-made for brand recall and recognition.
Some of the information need to be mandatorily available on the product
labels, for example, FDA mentions that food product labels should contain nutritional
labeling, while some brand chooses to help pass relevant information to their
customers, for example, information about a promotional code or event.
Shrink Labels or Shrink Sleeve
labels – these labels are printed on plastic films. The labels are folded, or
the films are shrunk to cover the container using the shrinking methodology.
The labels are available in glossy or matte finish. It is one of the most
commonly seen labels – bottled beverages and drinks.
Pressure-sensitive labels – these
labels are face stock made with a water-based adhesive and a liner. These are
permanent, cannot be removed easily, and requires a solvent to remove the
labels. The labels are quite versatile and stick well on tubes, jars, bottles,
and containers.
In-mold labels – a pre-printed PP
(Polypropylene) the label gets placed on a mold during assembling, and when the
final product is made, the label too takes the shape of the final product. The
process of in-mold labeling involves either injection molding, blow molding, or
thermoforming.
Die-Cut Labels – these labels have
a tailor-made shape achieved using the die-cutting process. A die and a press
are used to get the customized shapes. The labels are used for branding
purposes and can be made colorfully and vividly using different visual
elements. The labels have a face stock, adhesive, and liner.
Thermal Labels – the distinct
printing process uses thermal printers to form the shapes of words and images.
Ink or toner is not used to create the printed matter on the labels. Another
heat source is used for changing the color of the labels.
Thermal transfer labels – in
applications and products where direct thermal labeling is not recommended, the
thermal transfer printing method is used as it lasts longer and is less
brittle. The labels are crisper and glossy.
